SALEM WOODS CIVIC ASSOCIATION BOARD MEETING
12/7/09

The Board Meeting of the Salem Woods Civic Association was called to order at 7:05 p.m. by  President  Kirk Traber with the following Board members present,  Skip Heyman, Heidi Rosen and Pete Leavitt, Kenny Sessoms and Scott Kittell.  SWCA member Kathy Toll was also present.
Old Business:  There was no old business to discuss.
New Business:
President, Kirk Traber

Kirk Traber opened the floor with some items for discussion.  The Board discussed vandalism at the office.  Various items are being placed on the roof, and now the attic vent is pried  up.  Discussion on fixing the lights with a motion sensor to actively turn on the light at night.  Skip mentioned a neighbor saw kids damaging the gutters at the office. The complaint was filed with Officer Day.   It was mentioned that when we file a police report, the Civic Association President must file the complaint.
Heidi informed us that the Boy Scouts would be using the clubhouse on Dec.17th from 6 – 8.
Lita Gedro is having the Kid’s Christmas party Dec. 13th from 2 – 5 with a visit from Santa and photos of the kids.  Snacks and Crafts will be offered.
Kenny Sessoms was welcomed to the Board.  He will take the Membership Board position and help in any way he can.
Neighborhood Watch
Skip has been gaining block Captains.  However, so far only about 22 have followed through with getting their section to sign up for Neighborhood Watch.  Skip will be doing Student Teaching next year and would like to get all 50 or so of his block captains to follow through on their commitment before he gets busy teaching next year!  Skip has been sending out great info to his Block Captains.
Treasurer, Heidi Rosen

Heidi presented the income and expenses so far for 2009.  The amount budgeted for expenses for the year was $69,654.  We have received $54,267 in income for the year and spent $59,176.  We have transferred $5,932 from reserves.   Budget is available in the office

Facilities

Scott Kittell, reiterated the need for a new diving board for next season ($1500), new shed roof and security lights for the office building.
A discounted program for pool membership is being considered for next year.  Families could get a discount ( possibly10 %) if they referred a friend who hadn’t previously been a pool member to join the pool.
Discussion (pros and cons) on possibly having volunteers from the pool committee take over the mowing of the common grounds.  More on this next year.
Security, Pete Leavitt

Pete discussed a resident’s fencing problem.  A fence had blown down from in between 2 properties and no one claimed the fence as theirs.  According to the city, and common sense, the owner of the fence has the property on which the fence is placed.
Pete also found out that Dominion Virginia Power will install street lights for $175.  This will be looked into as SWCA needs lights in both of their parking lots for safety.
Office Manager, Kathy Toll

Billing for SWCA dues of $60 will go out the first week in January.  Skip will put an article on the backside of the bill for Neighborhood Watch and we will try to get ads for part of the page to help cover the cost of mailing and printing the bill.
There being no further business to discuss, the meeting was adjourned at approximately 8:30.
Respectfully submitted,
Kathy Toll,
SWCA Office Manager/Secretary
